If you’re already addicted to Wordle, Quordle may be your next must-play game. This spin-off takes the familiar Wordle format and makes it harder by giving you four puzzles to solve at once.
As you can imagine, it’s hard – especially today! So if you’re already looking for Wordle tips, you’ll probably need them for Quordle as well. But while today’s Wordle almost cost me my 415-game streak, it doesn’t quite as bad as this – difficult.

wow! It was difficult. Not only do three words have a repeated letter (A in AMAZE and MANGA, and O in BOOZY), but there are also two Zs. MANGA is also quite a hard word to find, while BOOZY is quite colloquial. I made it with one spare guess, but at one point I was very worried about my streak.

Quordle FAQ: Everything you need to know
What is Quordle?
While Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word every day, Quordle presents four puzzles to solve. And instead of completing them one by one, you do it all at once. You get nine guesses, not six for Wordle, but otherwise the rules are very similar.
It is played online via Quordle page (opens in a new tab) and you can also get to it by Merriam-Webster website (opens in a new tab)after the dictionary bought Quordle last year.
As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player every day, which means you’re competing against the rest of the world. As with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight, so you have a new challenge every day.
The site also features a practice mode – which I strongly recommend you use before getting into the actual game! – and there are daily statistics, including the number of series. You also get Quordle Achievements – special badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing multiple times, or guessing particularly hard words.
And that’s difficult. Very difficult.
What are the rules of Quordle?
The rules of Quordle are almost identical to Wordle.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn grey…
4. … BUT the word you guessed appears in all puzzle quadrants at the same time, so A might turn green in one square, yellow in another, and gray in the last two.
5. The answers are never plural.
6. Letters may appear more than once. So if your guess is two of one letter, both may turn yellow, both turn green, or one may turn yellow and the other green.
7. Each guess must be a correct word in Quordle’s dictionary. For example, you cannot guess ABCDE.
8. You don’t have to type the correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent to Hard Wordle mode.
9. You have nine answers to find Quordle answers.
10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your time zone.
What is a good Quordle strategy?
Quordle needs to be approached differently from Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine tries, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a much better chance if you think strategically.
This is of course also the case in Wordle, but it is even more important in Quordle.
There are two key things to keep in mind.
1. Use some opening words
First, you won’t want just one starting word, but you almost certainly will two or three initial words.
The first one should probably be one of the best wordle starters, because the same things that make it work well will apply here as well. But then you should choose another word or two that uses much more of the most common consonants and that includes the remaining vowels.
For example, I currently use OLD > NAPKIT > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet, including all five vowels, Y, and the nine most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C, and H). There are many other options – you might want to put an M, B, F, or G instead of H instead of H – but something like this should do the trick.
If all goes well, this will give you a good indication of what one, and sometimes two, answers might be. If not, well, good luck!
2. Narrow the range
Secondly, if you are dealing with a word whose answer could be one of several options – for example -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you will definitely want to guess the word that would narrow down the options.
In Wordle, you can instead try several of them in turn and hope one of them is correct, assuming you’ve made enough guesses. It’s risky, but sometimes it works. Other than that, it’s the only option in hard mode. But in Quordle it will almost certainly fail – you just don’t have enough guesses.
In the above scenario, CLAMP would be a great guess because it could point the way to four out of seven words at a time.
